What is a nurse aide? ›

Nurse aides, also known as nursing assistants, are heavily involved in a patient's life and assist their patients with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, feeding, taking vital signs, helping patients walk and assisting with exercise, and much more.

In Kentucky, SRNA training programs include a minimum of 75 hours of instruction, with a minimum of 16 hours of supervised practical training, which takes place in a laboratory or other setting in which the student demonstrates practical skills under the supervision of an LPN or RN.

To become an SRNA, you must complete an approved SRNA training program and pass Kentucky's Nurse Aide competency evaluation/exam through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. After passing, you will be listed on the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry and allowed to work as a SRNA.

When comparing an RN and a CNA, the scope of work varies. RNs have more autonomy to do their jobs compared with CNAs, who are assistants to RNs and other medical providers. CNAs have a more limited scope and work under supervision, but they alleviate the workload of others, allowing for better overall patient care.

Depending on the state, you may be able to finish your CNA program, including attending CNA classes online and required in-person components, in 4-6 months. Your program completion time may vary depending on whether you enroll in full-time, part-time, or self-paced classes.

The KMA program prepares the state registered nurse aide (SRNA) to administer oral or topical medications as delegated and supervised by a licensed nurse. Current SRNA's with 6 months of work experience and nursing students are encouraged to obtain this credential.

CNA trainees demonstrate nursing skills on residents while under the guidance of a supervising nurse. The remaining “classroom” hours are knowledge-based learning with a textbook. These are not required to be in a physical classroom and can be completed by computer in an online CNA program.
