You absolutely must use organic lemons. But, even still, you should use a fruit and vegetable wash to clean the lemons before you steep the peels. I use the one from Trader Joes. But Amazon also sells one with good reviews.

How long will homemade limoncello last? ›

Homemade limoncello doesn't last as long as its store-bought counterpart. Stored in an airtight container, it should last in the refrigerator for up to three months or in the freezer for up to one year.

Does limoncello get better with age? ›

Fiore Limoncello is a liqueur with a relatively high (28%) alcohol content. Accordingly, it can age unopened for years with little to no degradation in quality, however once opened we recommend consuming it within a year for maximum lemon flavor.

Does limoncello go bad in the freezer? ›

It also doesn't matter whether the limoncello is commercial or homemade because alcohol is an excellent preservative. Keeping it in the freezer the whole time, while a waste of freezer space, probably does slow the decline of the flavor as colder temperatures tend to do in most cases.

What is the typical proof of limoncello? ›

Most limoncello is bottled between 28 percent and 32 percent alcohol by volume (ABV, 56 to 64 proof). It is possible to make your own limoncello using high-proof neutral grain alcohol (Everclear and vodka are popular choices).

Can bacteria grow in limoncello? ›

The alcohol prevents any mold or other bacteria from growing on the fruit. Once strained, the limoncello can be kept in the freezer for at least a year, and likely much longer.

Does limoncello have a lot of sugar? ›

How much sugar is in Limoncello? 1 1,5 fl oz of Limoncello contains 8 g of sugar.

How can you tell if limoncello is good? ›

The liqueur shouldn't leave your mouth puckered in discomfort, shouldn't smell of alcohol, and should always clearly display where the lemons are from on the bottle. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

How much is Aldi limoncello? ›

Aldi has just the tipple as it introduces popular Italian liqueur Limoncello (£8.99, 50cl) to shelves, available in stores from 19th February.

Limoncello is commonly served 'straight', without ice in either a shot glass or tulip tasting glass. Limoncello is poured directly from the freezer, to be consumed freezing cold.

What to do with lemons after limoncello? ›

Place lemons over a cutting board and cut into small dice, pulp, pith and all. Discard seeds. Place a saucer in the freezer.

Does homemade liqueur go bad? ›

While liqueur does not necessarily go "bad", it can lose quality after a certain amount of time. Flavors can change or become flat. It is therefore advisable to consume the liqueur within a certain period of time to get the best taste experience.

Can you infuse limoncello too long? ›

A: It can rest a really long time. There's nothing in it that would really go bad and I've tasted batches that rested for over 5 years with no problems.

Is homemade limoncello supposed to be cloudy? ›

Limoncello is made by mixing two solutions: the ethanolic extract containing the oils, and the aqueous sucrose solution. Each of these starting solutions is completely transparent; limoncello itself, however, is 'turbid', with a cloudy, opaque appearance.

How to know if limoncello is bad? ›

Despite its long shelf life, limoncello can eventually go bad if not stored properly. Signs of spoilage include a noticeable change in color, off-putting odor, and a bitter or rancid taste.
