In brief: antique appraisal, spring cleanups and more in Quaker Valley area (2024)

Antique appraisal

From 9-1 p.m. April 20, Sewickley Valley Historical Society welcomes visitors to join them at the Old Sewickley Post Office Building, 200 Broad St. for an antique appraisal and donation day.

SVHS will welcome professional antique appraisers — including Sewickley Valley’s own John Kroeck — and invites guests to have items from their personal collections appraised. For a suggested donation that will directly support SVHS, attendees are invited to bring up to three items to be appraised in a small-scale, hometown version of “Antiques Roadshow.” Suggested donation for one item is $10 and $20 for up to three items. Please note – appraisals are for personal use and reference. Written appraisals can be provided upon request with suggested donation. Items appraised at the event are not eligible for immediate donation to SVHS.

The SVHS reading room and the Old Sewickley Post Office Building will be open to visitors with select pieces from the Collections at SVHS on display. SVHS merchandise and local history books will be available for purchase.

Members of the community are encouraged to bring items related to the history of the Sewickley Valley to donate to SVHS for inclusion in their collection and archives. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to evaluate and process the donations and prepare them for possible accession into the Collections at SVHS.

Post-WWII materials are encouraged. Help us bring our collection up to the 21st century – your stories are Sewickley Valley History! Examples of items we accept include but are not limited to yearbooks, school photos, letters, maps, blueprints, journals, scrapbooks, ledgers, books, miscellaneous items, promotional items from local businesses, postcards, family photos, etc., pertaining to the 11 boroughs and townships that make up the Quaker Valley School District and the people who have lived and worked there.

Visit sewickleyhistory.org to RSVP. Advance registration by all attendees is requested, but especially by those bringing items to be appraised so that we can manage time with the appraisers. Free refreshments will be available for attendees, courtesy SVHS.

Cleanup planned

Sewickley Earth Day cleanup is set for 9 a.m. to noon April 27. Volunteers can begin checking in at 8:30 a.m. at the borough building, 601 Thorn St.

There they will pick up safety vests, gloves and some light refreshments before being sent out to parks and other sites in the borough. Tree planting opportunities are also planned that day. Lunch will be provided around noon for registered volunteers.

People can sign up through the borough website, sewickleyborough.org, or call the office at 412-741-4015.

Certificates approved

Council voted April 9 to approve a certificate of appropriateness for exterior alterations at 349 Walnut St. The property owner wants to rebuild an existing front porch, posts, guards and replace rotting wood and new footers. Certificates of appropriateness are required for property projects in the borough’s historic district.

Healthy Kids Day

The Sewickley Valley YMCA will host its annual Healthy Kids Day from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 20 at 625 Blackburn Road. Families are invited to participate in a fun-filled day of activities designed to get kids moving and having fun. Activities include a bounce house and pillow as well as games provided by a variety of organizations like Be Smart For Kids, Cochran Hose Co., Dollar Bank, Girl Scouts, Heinz History Center, Heritage Valley Health System and more.
